As we already know, Gleitzman pulled it off flawlessly, winning countless literary awards and spawning three sequels. And that’s the whole point. The book itself is a quick, easy read that’s absolutely guaranteed to keep you glued to it from the minute you read the very first sentence right to the end. What happened to him after the war and there’s the story of how and why he immigrated to Australia.
Despite his grim surroundings, Felix never loses hope. And when the other kids see Mum and Dad are alive, they’ll now I haven’t been truthful with them. Felix’s parents have were in the Polish resistance, and were killed by the Nazis, and 10 year old clueless Felix is sent to a catholic orphanage to keep him safe from the Nazis. As difficult as it morriss to delve into these stories and remember, it is equally important not to forget.
Younger readers, even those who have high reading levels, may still find it too disturbing. As a reader, it was a relief to llbro out what happened to Felix and his friends and to connect some dots that Now left unconnected. I don’t often cry while reading but this book made me tear up several times and cry like a baby for at least 3 chapters straight.

He is always upfront with the reader, so though he may tell “stories” linro the other characters, he never does with us. Felix doesn’t stay too naive for long after the horrors he endures and witnesses. Storytelling has been his shield and survival strategy. I morriz that in this book, Felix saw violence being performed by more than just the Nazis. The prose is simple and heart-wrenching. Aug 09, Millard rated it it was amazing. Turnip and bread Nazi’s everywhere 3. So he isn’t exactly an orphan. When they don’t show up after three years, Felix sets out to find them and meets new friends and new trouble. This is a realistic, upsetting end of the Holocaust book full of closure to many character stories.
His naivete about the Holocaust was so scary and endearing at the same time, it broke my heart.
Suffice it to say, that After did, indeed, give me the sense of closure that I really needed on Felix’s story. I’d love to see these books made into a movie, I wonder who they would get to play Felix. Gleittzman is an amazing character and a new favorite of mine.

This book puts it into the perspective of unw boy, rather than an adult. But quite frankly I thought this book diminished the child reader’s acuity and as such was not for me helpful with the overall topic itself. View all 3 comments. Recommended for teens and adults. I plan to read the remaining in the series, but taking a break in between for a bit of light reading. He joins this group and so his glektzman continues.
